The General Assembly of Virginia was a far different place when George N. McMath was first elected in 1963. The regular sessions were held every other year; Delegates had no office space; and there was almost no clerical help.

You Win Some, You Lose Some presents, from a personal standpoint, the life of a Virginia legislator back in the 1960s and 1970s. The 383 page book describes a different era in politics when voter information was not available on computers and match pads were the popular item for distribution to voters.

Reminisces described in You Win Some, You Lose Some will evoke memories of a time when liquor was unavailable by the drink, when voters had to pay a poll tax, and when the state sales tax was non-existent. The book presents the whole life of a legislator fifty years ago, and is said to be a major contribution to the political history of Virginia.
